January Update

Our trip planning is now moving into higher gear with our “soft” departure date in May.

A bit of history of how we have transformed our dream of doing this trip to the reality of actual planning to leave in May. Judi and I started talking about it in 2003 and originally planned on leaving in 2011 when Judi had originally planned on retiring.

In 2005 we started looking around and researching at what we would like to have as a boat for the trip. After 20 years and ~24,000 miles on “Campbell’s Sloop” it was clear that a sailboat with 7 foot draft and a 60 foot mast that was set up for offshore sailing was not going to provide the level of comfort and flexibility we wanted for the trip. We found “JEJUDA” in September of 2005, made a really rude offer, which was accepted, and we were off and running. We have done many upgrades and maintenance and have spent the last two summers becoming familiar with the boat.

Some specifications for JEJUDA

LOA: 40'
LWL: 34’ 04”

JEJUDA,
Have read your introductory blog and studied the pic of the Spindrift. We have not and are not likely to travel the Loop, but we are interested in those who do/did. We travelled from Penetanguishene on Georgian Bay through the Trent-Severn Waterway to Ottawa on the Rideau Canal and back last year from June 5 to AUGUST 26. This winter we purchased the charts for Georgian Bay's Thousand Islands and The North Channel, and had PROWESS' first ever windlass installed, in the hopes we can explore our home waters. We base ourselves in Bay Moorings Marina.
If it is your intention to travel thr T-SW and Georgian Bay ,we urge you to buy the spiral bound soft cover books called Ports Guide to The Trent-Severn, and Ports Guide to Georgian Bay and The Thousand Islands.
We will watch the horizon this summer for JEJUDA and hail if we see her. Her distinctive cabin window framing will make her readily identifiable.

JEJUDA,
Here are the real titles of the guide books previously mentioned:
Ports The Cruising Guides:
1]Trent-Severn/Lake Simcoe PORTS
2]Georgian Bay/Lake Huron/North Channel PORTS
Using Google, search for 'PORTS THE CRUISING GUIDE' and there you will be. You can scan through the actual book by turning the lower right corner of the page of the virtual book that can be 'called' to the screen.
Errata for Mar.9/08:
thr-through
Thousand Islands- 30 Thousand IslandS
We looked at some Spindrifts listed on Yacht World; extremely spacious boats even for 40 feet, and the right engines, too [Lehman-Fords]. Seem to have been very popular on the west coast in the 1980's.
